The puppy has been eating dry Iams Puppy. Please keep the puppy on this or another excellent puppy food. If you feed your puppy table scraps and treats he will not want to eat dry food. Dry food will aid is his general and dental health and will save you vet bills for infected gums. Pugs also do not tolerate table scraps well. She will also be an older age before you have to start cleaning her teeth.
This puppy has been free-fed (food down all the time). If you do no( wish to do this, set up a routine whereby she gets half her food in the morning and the other half at supper time (1/2 cup in the morning, 1/2 cup at supper, do not feed her more than I cup of food a day). Do not leave it down longer than 20 minutes. If she does not cat it, then pick the dish up and do not feed him again until the next regular time. Make sure that she always has fresh clean water.
The puppy has been used to playing with rope toys, small stuffed animals and cow hooves. I do not recommend rawhides because as they chew they get smaller, small pieces can break off and get lodged in the windpipe.
The puppies play area and eating area are entirely separate from where the newspapers have been placed. Most dogs will not potty in their area. The puppy is still too small to fully understand housebreaking. If she makes a mistake, IT IS YOUR FAULT, not hers. As soon as she wakes up, she should be taken outside or to the newspapers where you want her to go potty and gently urged to stay there until she has done her business. Make sure you praise her when she has gone where you want her to go. Puppys always do a circling motion while looking for a spot to potty. If you notice this action, take the pup to where you want her to go and praise her when she has done her business. Housebreaking success depends on several things - Age - How clear you are with your directions. Consistency is essential. It is necessary to keep a close watch on your puppy, if a mistake happens, gently pick her up with BIG "NO" and place the pup where you want her to do her business. It shouldn't be very far away, puppys at this age have a very short attention span. It is better to catch the pup circling, before she goes - place her on the paper or slide a piece of paper under her, or very quickly put her outside and when she's done her business give her lots of praise. Do not distract the pup or l@ikc her too far from where she was circling or she will forget what she was doing and get excited over the praise. Try to watch her quietly and then praise her immediately after she has done her business.
If the puppy tries to chew the wrong things, try Bitter Apple (clear, odourless liquid) and spray or rub it on furniture, cords, shoes, etc. in the pups absence. It is to divert her attention to the right things rather than to correct the pup. Correct her only if she persists in chewing the wrong things. This breed is intelligent and stubborn - they very quickly learn all the ways to get negative attention.
Once a week (at least) clean her ears and every other day clean her nose roll with baby oil and a tissue (baby wipes also work well). Sleepers will have to be removed from her eyes. Keep her nails short. Pugs do not need to bathed often, this will dry out the skin. They do however, love to be brushed (watch their eyes) when it feels good down the back they may twist their head toward you and the brush.
Keep a close watch on her eyes, be prepared for scratches etc. it is advisable to keep Gentocin in your fridge in case of a scratch. Nevet- use an ointment or drop tilitt contains steroids, until after the scratch has healed. Steroids delay the healing process, however it is advisable to use a drop that contains steroids after the scratch or ulceration has healed as this reduces scarring on the cornea. If you notice that your Pug is holding their eye(s) partially shut, rubbing it excessively, etc. treat it right away and often (every three hours) until you can get her to the vet for a check. With prompt and frequent treatment, the eye is usually better within a couple of days. Most vets will recommend you treat the dog three or four times a day, this is fine for a dog that has a nose, if you watch how many times a flat faced dog with impaired vision will brush into something and put more germs into the eye you will realize that you can't put the drops in too often. Eyes are marvellous things and the worst looking injuries can heal very nicely with some 'round the clock' attention for the first few days. It is advisable to take the dog to the vet and have the eye stained to ensure that it has heated before you discontinue the medication.
It is important to find a vet who will listen to you and who you feel comfortable with. You will spend a lot of time with your pet, watching and thinking - however we are not vets and we need them. However, you should have a vet who doesn't always have to be right at any cost and one who is willing to listen to you so that a proper diagnosis can be made. Approach your vet as you would your own doctor and if vou feel he is going down the wrong path do not be afraid to say so. A good vet will appreciate what you think.
Please do not let small children carry or pick up your puppy. ONI-'Y LET THEM HOLD THE PUPPY WHILE SITTING ON THE FLOOR!! Puppys should never be put on anything until they are big enough to jump up there by themselves - even then they can often cliznb on something before they are able to jump down without doing some damage. Also be aware of ,numbed out' teenagers in front of the TV letting a pup jump dox%,n off their lap. Toddlers can pick up puppies correctly but because of their small hands may squeeze the pup too hard in order not to drop it and could cause some serious injury. PLEASE, PROTECT YOUR NEW PUP AND FAMILY MEMBER FROM CHILDREN AND EVEN ABSENT MINDED ADULTS. The puppy is counting on you to look out for her!
This breed has been pampered by royalty for hundreds of years, A lot of normal dog instincts have been bred out of them. They may wander away from the house, while you think they are laying just behind you as you work in the garden. They may not have the slightest idea how to find you again. F'UGS ARE NOT RELIABLY IN BOUNDARY TRAINING. I have had calls from heartbroken Pug owners " He never went out of the yard", "He wouldn't come when I called". I don't understand it but believe me it happens - don't let it happen to you. If you have children and have finally taught them to watch the door and always shut it tight -then you still have to watch their friends and your friends and your workmen etc. Owning a Pug is often as much trouble as having a permanent two year old but the rewards are such as you will never experience with another breed!
