NOSE ROLL
Some Pugs do not have prominent nose rolls. They have what is called a "broken roll" which means the nose roll does not actually come all the way across the nose in a nice plump fashion, however, it comes up to the center and appears to be broken and then proceedes down to the cheek again. Pugs with broken nose rolls, or small rolls may not need persistent cleaning, but, if your Pug has a large nose roll that sits on his little button nose, you will need to pay extra attention to what goes on under the roll. It is a playground for bacteria and irritations. You will want to check it frequently and keep it dry and clean.
To clean the nose roll:
Use a Q-tip or cotton ball and swipe under the roll with baby oil or mineral oil. Follow up using a Stridex pad or a mild antiseptic. Keep swiping until it comes clean. If your Pug doesn't stay still to have his nose roll lifted and cleaned, do it while he is asleep.
Also, make sure the nose does not get crackly and dry. You may need to keep mineral oil on the nose or "Bag balm" to keep it moist.
If your Pug’s nose roll area does get irritated, red and sore, you will need to make sure it is clean and apply an antibiotic ointment on the sore area. An over the counter ointment will work, but consult your Vet first before treating an infected nose roll. Never use cortisone on a chapped, raw nose or on an irritated nose roll. If the nose roll area is clean and yet retaining to much moisture and itchy you can lightly apply baby destitin to the that area.
